Howler monkeys actually have it a little rough because they are finicky vegetarians. So competition between various troops for the best feeding areas is intense.

Howlers are able to use their tails to move around pretty fast when they want to. This group didn't seem to care that we were there watching them. They were definitely making loud calls to each other and, possibly, towards another group.
We never got lost, but it's easy to imagine how you could in the dense vegetation here. The preserve includes very rare coastal swamps and some gorgeous jungle along the beach. Hopefully they are able to prevent any further development of this beautiful area.
A closer look at the MAGIC ferns. Do they close to reduce how many animals or insects eat them? How long do they take to re-open? What are the long-term toxic effects of contact with them?
